The Police Station located at 282 Union Street is undergoing major renovations. The HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) System is being replaced after operating unsatisfactorily for many years.
Since being appointed Police Chief in 1993, our government officials have attempted to secure funding to replace the unit. Mayor Joseph Sullivan toured the building several times over the last few years and supported the renovation project. Through his efforts and the support of the Town Counsel, the project received the financial support to finally become reality.
Officer Sean McConville who has some background in the construction field was assigned as our Clerk of the Works. He has done a great job overseeing the project.
The main contractor is APEX Corporation from Abington. The project began in July and it is expected to be completed by early December. The project includes replacing the entire HVAC System, new wiring and lighting, and new ceilings throughout the facility. The general public will also see a new front lobby when entering the station. The Records Division is being moved to the front of the building as well, so our customers can have easier access when seeking copies of police reports.
Personnel
Three police officers retired from active service this year: Officer Gary Connell (July), Officer William Cushing, Sr. (September) and Officer Raymond Blake (October). These officers all served for over 30 years in the department.
The department began its civilian dispatcher program in August of 2010. There are currently three full time civilians working: Amanda Papantonakis, Donald Delaney and Chris Parker. There are also four dispatchers in training: Gloria Hollstein, Nicholas Canelli, Josh Wallace and Jim Keenan.
In an attempt to fill police officer vacancies, we have conducted interviews with two potential candidates for lateral transfer. That process is moving along and a decision on these appointments should be made in the next few weeks. We also are in the process of reviewing candidates for appointment from our residential civil service list. The department has four positions reserved at the MBTA Police Academy which begins in January of 2012.
